綜合媒體報導，黎巴嫩當局6年前查獲並沒收一批重達2750噸的硝酸銨，儲放在貝魯特港的一間倉庫中，但卻沒有實施任何安全防護。
據安全服務部門公佈調查結果表示，初步判斷是有人發現另一座倉庫上有個大洞，爲防止物品被竊，在攝氏40.5度的高溫下進行「焊接」，不料火花意外引爆存放在另外一間倉庫的2750公噸硝酸銨。

事故死傷者中還包括多名外國人，據日本內閣官房長官菅義偉表示，一名日本公民受輕傷，澳洲總理莫理森(Scott Morrison)證實，一名澳洲公民在事故中喪生，德國外交部在推特上亦表示，德國大使館的工作人員也有受傷。
根據德國球科學研究中心（GFZ）指出，此次爆炸威力相當於規模3.5地震，200公里外的賽普勒斯都能感受得到。
