俄羅斯發動對烏克蘭侵略戰爭後，24日下午雙方在切爾諾貝利（Chernobyl）隔離區爆發激烈交戰。烏克蘭總統首席顧問波多利雅科（Mykhailo Podolyak）證實，烏克蘭喪失了對切爾諾貝利核電廠址的控制。
外界擔憂切核廢料儲存設施可能受損、輻射性落塵可能覆蓋歐洲。波多利雅科告訴美聯社，「在俄軍對這個方向發動毫無意義的攻擊之後，已不可能說切爾諾貝利核電廠是安全的。這是當今歐洲面臨的最嚴重威脅之一」。
切爾諾貝利核電廠反應爐位於烏國首都基輔北方130公里，接近和白俄羅斯邊界。
白宮發言人普薩基（Jen Psaki ）說，俄軍控制了切爾諾貝利核電廠的工作人員作為人質。

據國防分析專家、作家薩頓（H I Sutton）在推特發布的消息，分散在地中海的俄羅斯海軍艦艇24日出現不尋常的集結，並向敘利亞方向前進，其中包括2艘光榮級巡洋艦(Slava Class Cruiser)和多艘驅逐艦（DDGs）。這被視為俄軍戒備美法海軍介入黑海而進行的外圍防護。

同時，烏克蘭武裝部隊透露，俄羅斯已經將60 個營級戰術小組部署到烏克蘭境內，這大約意味著3至 6名士兵。是此前俄羅斯在烏克蘭邊界集結的戰術營的一半。
